Save money and use trains to Brazil!
The average traveller does generally not consider trains to Brazil when he or she is hopping from country to country. Instead, the majority almost always take flights. However, when you can save on your expenses and grasp the advantages that rains to Brazil have on offer, why not take rail instead of air? The money you save can be spent on your experience instead, thus enabling you to fully and truly appreciate the natural world and culture around you instead of wasting it on comfort that is short lived!
Within Brazil, trains are scarce. There are very few trains to Brazil that continue through the interior from border to border. As a result, it is not a viable mode of travel within the country. Instead, the chosen method of getting from place to place is via the developed bus system (LINK – bus travel Brazil). However, there is an alternative within the cities. Many of them now how metro transport links that are literally designed to be like a subway underground system. Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, Recife, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Porto Alegre have metro systems, with Fortaleza and Salvador metros currently being under construction. They allow you to easily get from A to B within a city. However, you have to get to the cities first and trains to Brazil will help in that respect!
There are no trains to Brazil from neighbouring countries like Suriname, Guyana, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru and Paraguay. However, there are trains to Brazil from Bolivia, Argentina and Uruguay. The easiest trains to Brazil to catch are from Bolivia. The countries both use 1000mm gauge rails. This may sound like nonsense but it means that travelling in from Bolivia will save you money. In the trains system, the lines have to be compatible for the trains to Brazil to travel continuously, and this happens from Bolivia. However, it does not from Argentina or Uruguay.
From those two countries, trains to Brazil would be more expensive and the journey would be much longer because it would require stopping at border to change trains. This is less cost efficient as well so it would be more expensive. The cheapest tickets from Bolivia would be about $40. However, from Argentina and Uruguay, the trains to Brazil would cost almost double that.
However, trains to Brazil still remain a cost effective option, being much cheaper than a flight. Also, an added extra is the beautiful scenery you can experience whilst taking trains to Brazil. That alone is worth the journey and will give you scenes that last for a lifetime!
