Retro Brazil may be a phrase that does not mean an awful lot to many individuals outside of South America, but for those individuals that care about fashion it should. Many have heard of the catwalks of Paris and Milan, but they often neglect the fashions of Rio de Janeiro. However, Rio de Janeiro does actually set trends on a global basis as well as within South America. However, the trends set there have definitely fit into the concept of retro Brazil in recent years!
Rio de Janeiro fashion week is held every year during the first week of June and designers go to showcase their work as well as set trends. However, in 2007, all fashions took on a distinctly Brazil retro feel that will revolutionize the way the world thinks about fashion in the coming year. The trends did look to the past for inspiration, thus providing the retro Brazil look, but it also looked to the present to give the designs a slightly new twist!
It was the bikinis that first displayed a retro Brazil feel, with designs drawing inspiration from world fashions in the 1960s and 1970s, as well as converting the look into a modern and more practical outfit that could be worn to the beach. However, the inspiration did not stop at the bikinis. The styles were all retro Brazil, but the new slant was entirely modern Brazil. Many of the clothing ranges were environmentally friendly, whether made out of recycled materials or those that did not harm the environment to manufacture. This was considered street wear and can commonly be found on the streets today.
Many other items of clothing that appeared on the catwalks and now appear in shops include classic items like the pleated skirt and clothing that actually covers up some of the body! This is not what Brazil has been known for in the past but it seems that they are trying to create a new image for the Brazilian babes that is not so openly exuding sex!
Retro Brazil looks set to stay and will most likely feature in the Rio de Janeiro fashion week in 2008 as well.
