A Brief Primer On Retirement In Brazil!
For a growing number of retirees, retirement in Brazil is an attractive option. After all, what more could one want after thirty or fifty years of hard work than to retire somewhere with a gorgeous year round climate and a low cost of living? It's hard to think of someone this would not appeal to. Still, when it comes to something as important as where to live for the remainder of your life, it pays to hear both sides.
Brazil is very well suited to freethinking retirees with a desire to reinvigorate their zest for life. Those who are not too attached to the creature comforts of industrial civilization might enjoy or even thrive in Brazil. Here's what one grandmother had to say about the possibility of retirement in Brazil:
Look at retirement as a chance to live your dreams, and be mindful of how you can start to build opportunities for greater fun. That's my prescription for the Social Security Blues! That, and the dream of finding a lovely little home on the coast of Brazil, where I can adopt Portuguese as my second language, take up painting, pen my first novel, found a new school, build a playground for the kids, create a garden for the neighborhood, or just be the happiest grandma around. Brazil seems like the ideal place for me.
Clearly, it make sense to retire to Brazil if you view retirement as a chance to unleash inner passions that may have rested dormant during your working years. However, others caution against retirement in Brazil if you cherish the modern conveniences of Western civilization:
“You can live well on a small sum of money, and there's no beating the healthy environment. However, deciding to live there is a major decision that should not be taken lightly. Crime is a concern, though not enormous. Speaking Portuguese will make your life incalculably easier. (I speak it myself.) Inflation is another worrisome trend. When I bought my house, the seller insisted on an all cash payment, which is apparently widespread due to the high inflation. If you think gas is expensive in the US, prepare for more of the same in Brazil. Car ownership is an expensive proposition. Energy is costly as well, and if you live anywhere north of Rio, air conditioning is practically a necessity. Internet service can be somewhat expensive as well. That said, Brazil is still one of the all-around nicest places to retire to that I can think of. You just need to decide how well you match up with the living conditions.
That last sentence cannot be stressed enough: Brazil is a terrific place to spend your retirement, if your personality and expectations match the reality of living there. The best way to get a feel for this is to consult with travel agents, knowledgeable friends and relatives, and the free, no-nonsense information on this web page. Depending on the lifestyle you wish to lead, retirement in Brazil might be just the thing you've been looking for!
