Experience One of the World’s Largest Wetland Ecosystems at Pantanal Brazil
Visiting Pantanal Brazil is one of the most breathtaking and exhilarating adventures you will ever take in your life – as home to what may be the world’s largest and certainly the most diverse freshwater wetland ecosystem, you’ll never see anything else like it. The wildlife and the vegetation are unique to this area of Brazil – it is certainly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Pantanal Brazil is home to over 3,500 species of plants – and scientists are certain that there are others which haven’t been discovered yet. Over 650 kinds of birds, about 100 mammal species, 400 types of fish, and about 80 species of reptiles call this area of wilderness their home – including about 10 million caiman, a species closely related to alligators! It is also home to a number of endangered species, making this part of the world an extremely important location for conservation.
There are two specific parks here that are worth a visit: the Pantanal Matogrossense National Park, and the SESC Pantanal Private Natural Heritage Reserve. Both work toward nature preservation, and visitors here will be able to ask questions and see what kinds of efforts are being taking to care for the animals and wildlife of the Pantanal.
There are a number of cites located inside the Pantanal Brazil area, but quite often there is better lodging found elsewhere, closer to the wildlife. Along the main roads into the heart of the Pantanal are “fazendas” – these are cattle stations which often have accommodations for guests traveling in the area. This is where tourists will experience the “real” Pantanal, since the lodges often only take in a few guests at a time.
A few recommended places to try are: Fazenda Barranco Alto, a small lodge along the banks of the Rio Negro that is surrounded by plenty of freshwater and saltwater lakes. If this is occupied, a larger and more ‘traditional’ ranch called the Caiman Lodge is quite popular, though slightly more resort-style in its accommodations.
Often, visitors can purchase tours into the Pantanal from other Brazilian cities – from Campo Grande, buses will take tourists all the way there, though it may take 4 to 5 hours to actually get into the area. Be patient! It’s worth the drive to get there.
Some animals you might expect to see inside Pantanal Brazil are the giant river otter, the capybara, howler and capuchin monkeys, giant anteaters, possibly even a jaguar or a tapir! It’s not unusual to spot many different kinds of birds and parrots, from the tiniest hummingbird to the large, beautiful hyacinth macaw.
