Although considered a major city in southern Bahia, the city of Ilheus Brazil is a wonderful location for visitors who want to spend time in a famous Brazilian city, but who enjoy a more relaxed and casual atmosphere than a place like Salvador or Sao Paulo. Founded in 1534, Ilheus Brazil is primarily centered around the tourism industry today – its rich historic background means there are many early buildings to see and a lot of established culinary tradition.
Since tourism is the main industry of the city, the hotels and restaurants here cater to visitors and strive to ensure that foreigners have the best possible time while there. It is also notably smaller in population, with only about 222,000 people, but the appeal rests greatly in the fact that the downtown center is only about one kilometre away from the beach.Beaches in Ilheus Brazil are graced with calm swimming waters, pristine and white sands, and fields of coconut trees – both cultivated and wild groves. The Northern Beach is a perfect spot for visitors looking to fish, swim, or surf – one of the few surfing areas here, since most of the waters are so calm. However, Bahia’s state surf championships are often held at the Back Door beach in the Olivenca district! The Beach of the Avenue is a centrally located spot, which has seaside attractions such as a bike land, a band shell, a small circus, and several sports courts.
Some of the more laid back beaches are the Acuipe, a beach that mixes sandbank vegetation with coconut fields, while the Canabrava beach has many rental cottages along a landscape that includes some incredible coral reef.
Another reason why Ilheus Brazil has become famous is that it was the home of one of Brazil’s most famous and influential authors: Jorge Amado. The author’s father purchased his former residence and turned it into an incredible museum dedicated to the author’s life and works – after all, Amado’s writings were translated into nearly 30 languages, with several books made into films. The Bar Vesuvio is a very popular establishment with tourists and locals because it is where Amado often visited to write his books – he even mentioned one of its dishes, the ‘Nacib’s kibbeh’, in the novel “Gabriela, Cravo e Canela”.
One fascinating location that isn’t to be missed is Ilheus’ Sloth Recovery Center within the Centro Educativo da Natureza! Visitors can spend some time in the center, learning about how it helps to recover and re-introduce various species of sloth into their natural habitats! The center won the 1998 Nature Prize for their conservation efforts, and guests are advised to call ahead of time to reserve a spot on the four-hour tour of the facilities and the surrounding forest.
