Guarulhos Brazil - Sao Paulo's Hub Of International Travel
Guarulhos Brazil is Sao Paulo's International Airport. It is not actually located in Sao Paulo, but in the suburb of Guarulhos, about 25 kilometers from the city (about 18 miles or so). It is also called Cumbica International Airport.
Guarulhos Brazil is one of the biggest international airports in the world. It has two terminals and offers flights to the United States, Europe, China, Japan, United Arab Emirates, Canada, South Africa and other Latin American countries as well. In addition to direct flights to many countries of the world, they offer connecting flights nearly everywhere.
The Guarulhos Brazil airport is fully modern and quite convenient. You can walk between the terminals, so that making connecting flights is that much faster and easier. They are working on building a new terminal as well.
You can get to Guarulhos Brazil easily by taking the Presidente Dutra highway, or the Ayrton Senna and following signs. It takes between 45 minutes to an hour to get there from the city center of Sao Paulo, possibly more during rush hour traffic. There are also buses that go from the center of Sao Paulo to Guarulhos Brazil, and connecting buses to take you to the city's other airport.
There are banks to change money, restaurants and shops, and other tourist services. There are tourist information counters where you can plan your trip and book hotel reservations.
If you are interested in shopping and eating, it is best to do it before you head to the gates. There are lots of things to see, including Brazilian crafts that make great gifts, but once you go past the security checkpoints, there aren't very many services.
Sao Paulo has two airports, Guarulhos and Congonhas. Guarulhos Brazil is for international flights and Congonhas has only flights within Brazil.
Congonhas made headlines in July 2007 because of a deadly crash on one of it's runways. The reason for the crash was that the tower was understaffed, and the terrible incident began to raise doubts about air safety in Brazil. Basically, Brazil has few government regulations controlling air safety.
Brazil's tourist industry is growing, and it was put on shaky ground by the crash. Because of this, Brazil's airports are now looking into ways to improve safety and reassure foreign travelers that they will be in good hands.
