A Quick Look At Brazil Sports
Brazil sports are out of control! Brazil may be one of the most sports-obsessed countries in the world. Whether you are into watching or playing, Brazil sports have lots to offer everyone.
Football - The #1 Brazil Sport
Football in Brazil is more than a sport. It's a way of life. Don't be confused by the name; "football" does not mean throwing the pigskin around the 30-yard line. The rest of the world (outside the US) knows "soccer" as "football," and in Brazil it is called "futebol."
Football is popular in Brazil for several reasons. For one, it is fast paced and fun to watch. This is the reason why World Cup Soccer is the most watched sports event in the world aside from the Summer Olympics. Also, you don't need anything to play soccer except for something to kick, and a big area in which to play.
Few would argue if you said that Brazil leads the world in football. No World Cup Soccer team has won as many cups as Brazil.
Volleyball
Volleyball is a close second in Brazil sports. In the world of international volleyball, Brazil is the champion in all categories, including indoor and beach volleyball.
Why is volleyball such a popular Brazil sport? Brazil has nearly 5,000 miles of coastline, so that could have something to do with it. If you go to the beach in Brazil, there will always be a volleyball game going on somewhere, and usually two or three.
Beach Soccer
As you might imagine, the naturally creative Brazilian people have made up some sports of their own. There are too many to name here, but one is beach soccer. Imagine running around and kicking the ball on fluffy, white sand! It's a challenge to any soccer player. This is also called Footvolley.
Martial Arts
Capoeira is a unique Brazilian martial art developed by the Afro-Brazilian slaves in colonial times. It involves quick movements, often synchronized with music, and has been gaining popularity all over the world with martial arts enthusiasts.
Another martial art of Brazil is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Jiu-Jitsu came originally from Japanese settlers at the beginning of the 20th century, and has since developed into its own fighting art, especially with the innovations of the Gracie family.
You can often see Brazil's martial arts practiced by fighters in the Ultimate Fighter Championships all over the world.
In addition to the Brazil sports mentioned above, swimming, tennis, rugby, boxing, judo, sailing, golf, surfing and handball are all immensely popular in Brazil. If you like playing or watching sports, Brazil is a sports-crazy country that you will enjoy!
