Explore a Hub of Culture and History at Brazil Recife – A Former Dutch Colony!
The city of Brazil Recife is the capital of Pernambuco, estimated to be the fifth largest city metropolis in the country – not to mention one of the most important cultural and economic centers in the northeast! With a population of just over 1.5 million, Recife is a major port along the Atlantic Ocean – its name even means ‘reef’ in Portuguese!
One of the things Brazil Recife is famous for is its geography, as the area is surrounded by rivers and architecturally stunning bridges, with islands and mangroves dotting the landscape. Often referred to as the ‘Brazilian Venice’, it is heralded as a cultural capital – and for good reason! It was one of the first areas to be settled by the Portuguese crown in Brazil, but the colony was given over to private investors in order to finance it.
Between 1580 and 1640, while Spain and Portugal were allied under the same ruler, Spain was at war with the Netherlands – and determined that the Dutch wouldn’t be allowed to come to Brazil. In opposition, the Dutch invaded several of Brazil’s top sugar-producing cities, including Recife! During its period under Dutch rule, Recife became a highly cosmopolitan city – the first Jewish synagogue in the Americas was even built here!
When visiting Brazil Recife, there are plenty of things to see and do! You’ll find that the best beach in the area is Boa Viagem, a long beach surrounded by pristine, white sands. Vendors sell their t-shirts and hats, while plenty of kinds of food and drink are available all along the boardwalk. If you’re not sure what kind of food to try, Recife is actually the home of two little traditional cakes worth a taste! The Bolo de Rolo and the Bolo Sousa Leao are delicious specialties, though you simply can’t leave without trying Caldinho soup – try the shrimp or black bean kinds!
For lovers of the theatre, Recife is actually the third largest center for theatre productions in Brazil! The Teatro Santa Isabel is a historic building from the late 1800s, where plays are still held – though if you prefer a more modern atmosphere, the Convention Center for the Federal University of Pernambuco is a good option.
There are many, many history and art museums in Brazil Recife – everything from native archaeology to train museums to modern art can be found here! And if you simply can’t get enough of the local culture, why not take in one of the football games? The Clube Nautico Capibaribe, Sport Clube do Recife and the Santa Cruz Futebol Clube all play and practice here. If there’s one thing you can’t miss while visiting Brazil, it’s experiencing a football game!
