Brazil newspapers: keeping citizenry informed
Brazil newspapers are as varied as are those in any country in the world that espouses free press. Dozens of newspapers can be accessed, with some of them having online versions for easy access. Most of the larger cities and towns have at least one newspaper, and many communities have two or three. A Brazil newspaper dedicated to people traveling in Brazil may have a somewhat different focus than a business oriented newspaper, but there are many daily or weekly journals of high quality. For anyone planning on traveling in Brazil in the near future, selecting one of the tourist oriented newspapers that are available in order to get a feel for what's happing in the area where the traveling will occur keeps the latest information at the fingertips.
The three oldest Brazil newspapers still extant are the Diario do Pernambuco, O Estado de S_o Paulo and Jornal do Brazil. The Diario do Pernambuco is published in Recife, Brazil and was originally established in 1825.
O Estado de Paulo, literally "The State of S_o Paulo" is nicknamed "The Big State". The newspaper was founded in 1875 and originally showed a definite Republican bias against slavery and the monarchy. It is considered fiscally liberal and socially conservative. This is the most visible newspaper in Brazil, even when compared to the younger and more liberal Folha de S_o Paulo. The Estado and the Jornal do Brazil are each considered national newspapers as is the Folha de S. Paulo.
Jornal do Brazil is the third oldest of the Brazil newspapers. It is a daily, published from Rio de Janeiro and has been in operation since 1891. The newspaper was founded by monarchists and was strongly conservative in bias until the 1950s. At that time, it became a more mainstream journal although with a center left bias. It was known for its constant challenges to government censorship efforts. It was the first of the Brazil newspapers to carry an online edition, known as JB Online.
Brazil newspapers are found not only in the standard news format, but in specialty newspapers as well. For example, there is the Brazil Jornal do Commercio to keep you abreast of world trade, stock and commodity markets, as well as economic trends and business opportunities at home and abroad. Another specialty Brazil newspaper is one that is aimed at the huge tourist trade that visits Brazil attractions each season. Yet another Brazil newspaper is that of the arts and entertainment shows found in many parts of the country.
