The wonderful world of Brazil music
Brazil music is one of the country’s passions and has been since records began. With influences coming from Europe and Africa when the country was in its infancy, it is no wonder that innovative beats and rhythms originated there and have since spread around the world. The music of Brazil is constantly evolving, and it is no wonder when you consider how many genres there are!
Brazil music often blends any number of instruments together as a result of the indigenous traditions that were established in the earliest people of Brazil. Horns, drums, whistles, rattles and various other instruments are staple parts of the music of Brazil, but European and African instruments were added later, having a magnificent effect on Brazil music.
The Samba is perhaps the most famous of Brazil music genres. It was the music of the poor black slaves in the late 1800s. Coming from reggae, the smooth indigenous beats and choro, samba was soon the hit of the communities. The music of Brazil was firmly established with samba at the foundation. Other Brazil music genres were built from there.
Another of the Brazil music genres is the choro, and the one that Brazil music was borne out of. It originated in the 19th Century and is extremely similar to the polka in beat and composition. However, although it is still around, other genres of music in Brazil are more popular. The bossa nova, for example, emerged in the 1950s, combining jazz and samba. It also gave rise to a song called “The Girl From Ipanema”, which was a big hit in Europe and the United States at the time.
Another hit was the Lambada, and that actually originated in Brazil music too, from a genre known as forro. With an accordion, drum and triangle, the genre’s beat encourages dance and is often featured at the Carneval.
Brazil music is best known for being a huge part of Rio de Janeiro’s Carneval celebrations every year. With dancers, fireworks and lights everywhere, the music of Brazil compliments the atmosphere, thus making it electric. The fact that the music of Brazil is ingrained into Brazil’s culture also means that you find any number of clubs in every metropolitan area. They are usually located along the main roads and so really easy to locate. However, with so many bars and so many Brazil music genres, the rich nightlife will pull you in. One taste and I guarantee that you will be addicted!
