The Brazil currency exchange rate: the Real versus Dollars
The Brazil currency exchange rate as traded on the world currency or world forex markets is $1 BRL equal to $.51 in U.S. dollars. The unit of currency Brazil is the Brazilian real. One real is equal to 100 centavos. The traveler in Brazil may want to think about the fact that Brazil money exchange does not always go smoothly, since small change can be difficult to come by. In fact, ask for money Brazil in small bills when going through the process of changing money and check to make sure the seller has appropriate change before finalizing the sale.
The reestablishment of the real as the unit of currency occurred in 1994. Prior to that time, the cruzeiro was the currency of Brazil. The prior Brazil currency exchange rate was bouncing around significantly due to the high cost of inflation. When the real was implemented the purpose was twofold. First, it was intended to fight the high inflation levels and to provide stability for the actual exchange rate which had been pegged to the United States Dollar. Removing the peg to the dollar and devaluing the real set off a financial crisis in the country. The move to the real was very popular amongst the Brazilian people, though, so much so that the official who was head of the Ministry who pushed through the move was elected President of the country shortly thereafter.
The International Monetary Fund provided a rescue loan to shore up the Brazil currency exchange rate in 2002 that was paid off in 2005 prior to the 2006 due date. The loan was the largest made up to that time. The Brazilian Central Depository has attracted much speculative foreign investment during the recent period, perhaps too speculative and short term so that the US dollar has dropped in value against the real. Looking at the direct, less speculative investments presents an entirely different picture, so that monetary policy in setting out short term interest rates is well controlled by the Central Bank. The country is a net exporter with banking, energy and other raw materials making up the bulk of the gross national product.
There is an extensive network of ATMs in the country and most major international credit cards are accepted. This provides an easy way to acquire Brazil currency for only the cost of the ATM withdrawal. When withdrawing money from the ATM, the standard Brazil currency exchange rate applies, along with the charges and fees accessed by your card provider plus the ATM fees.
