“Fifty Years of Progress in Five” – The Incredible City of Brasilia Brazil
The official capital of the country, Brasilia Brazil was created as a planned city. This means that it doesn’t have nearly as rich a historical background as Brazil’s older metropolises, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t just as interesting! The city was inaugurated in 1960, and has been designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for its unique contribution to modern architecture.
The basic outline and structure of Brasilia Brazil was finished in only four years, between 1956 and 1960. Project leadership was headed by President Juscelino Kubitschek, who heralded the memorable slogan: “fifty years of progress in five!” Incredibly, it seems that his leadership and vision paid off, because the city was fully constructed in such a small amount of time, and is now one of the central hubs of transportation for travel within Brazil.
Brasilia Brazil is architecturally stunning in an incredibly unique way: the city itself was designed in the shape of a giant bird (or airplane, depending on your imagination), and specific zones within that bird shape were designated as sections with particular functions! Down through the ‘fuselage’ area of the airplane/bird is the “Monumental Axis” zone, where government buildings are housed – and the arched wings are residential and minor commercial districts! This very deliberate planning – designating certain areas of the bird/airplane as city areas that are actually symbolic of their placement – is why Brasilia has been lauded as a Heritage Site and admired by architectural enthusiasts around the globe.
While the city is still developing its own local culture, this simply makes Brasilia a very special place to experience. One excellent stop to make while you’re in the city is the Cultural Complex of the Republic, where the National Library and the National Museum are displayed. When you’ve finished there, why not head over to the Cathedral of Brasilia? This building was created by the famed architect Oscar Niemeyer, and is frequently visited by tourists who are curious about the tall, glass roof that opens to the sky.
Brasilia Brazil also hosts one of the most important film festivals in the country, the Festival de Cinema Brasiliero! This event happens every October/early November, and you’ll be able to see screenings of everything from short films to feature-length movies that will be released in the coming year. If you’ll be visiting a little earlier, the Japanese Festival happens every August, and it’s a great time to experience Brasilia’s Japanese community – everything from cultural dance to food is here!
