As the third-largest city in the country, the city of Belo Horizonte Brazil is a well-organized town with a heritage that dates back to approximately 100 years ago. The population here is just over 5 million, and was originally constructed to replace the city of Ouro Preto as the capital of Minas Gerais state. As a result, the streets are grid-pattered and the avenues lined with well-cared-for trees and clean gardens – and its location right in the middle of the state helps to draw the whole area together.
The culture in Belo Horizonte Brazil is focused notably on artistic groups such as the Grupo Corpo, which is possibly the most famous contemporary-style dance group in Brazil. One highly innovative group is Uakti, a music group that makes their own instruments out of odd materials, and there are numerous other rock bands that make Belo Horizonte their home.
If music isn’t really your thing, the 1940s neighbourhood of Pampulha has some excellent examples of modern Brazilian architecture, such as the Sao Francisco de Assis Church – which the Catholic leaders actually refused to consecrate for over a decade, due to its unusual structure. Next door is conveniently located an amusement park – so you can explore historical sites and have fun at the same time!
The Parque Muncipal of Belo Horizonte Brazil is a lovely oasis of natural green forestry, right in the midst of the city. Fashioned after French parks, there are several small lagoon areas where you can feed some of the local ducks, or rent a boat to paddle out on the water. There are several excellent local drink specialties that are worth trying while you’re here: the catowaba is a sweet, wine-like drink that makes a great dessert, while cachaca is an excellent additive to mixed drinks. You can also get fresh acerola puree mixed with orange juice, which will be squeezed right in front of you – or if you’d like, ask for some abacaxi (pineapple) or mamao (papaya)!
Since Belo Horizonte is a central hub through which travelers easily pass to get to other colonial towns, the transportation here is well organized and certainly safe enough to try on your own. Though the city may be very large, it’s certainly more laid-back than other large cities in Brazil – and is definitely worth a stop!
